Starless But Spicy: Brianna Knickerbocker of dark L.A. electro-pop project Starless told us about her Spice Girls experience.
Brianna Knickerbocker: It was a dream come true seeing Spice Girls at Wembley Stadium in London in 2019. The costumes, their energy and the staging; the lighting were all absolute magic and mesmerizing.
But beyond them just being phenomenal performers, the show was extra special because my two sisters and I grew up listening to Spice Girls, and I got to go to the show with my surviving sister. But we carried our sister who died a few years back, with us to the show in our hearts. Hearing the songs Jenna especially loved like “Viva Forever,” the extra painful ones like “Goodbye,”and all of our songs from when we were young and happy and filled with hopes for a bright future together, was beyond precious and special.
It was an indescribable experience. It really influenced my music in that I wanted to never steer clear of: the darkness, uncomfortable feelings, painful subjects. I had always been called to the dark, unafraid, and that’s why I came up with such a dark name for my music, Starless. But knowing how I carried those memories with my sisters through music, knowing how those songs affected me, made me reassured about following a darker route with my dark electronic pop songs. And how that could shine a light within the dark for listeners of my songs.
I’ve since delved deeper into writing about all types of dark, not only touching on unsaid secret things and right versus wrong, but exploring my love for horror and monsters like vampires and hell even cannibals (yes I am actually currently writing a song about a cannibal, ha! Remember when I said I love horror? I was not kidding). If it’s dark, it’s not off limits for me to write about, is how I see it!
